Jacopo Catani (Group Leader)

A brief description of my research activity and career.

Leader of an experimental research group of the Istituto Nazionale di Ottica (CNR-INO) on Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) and Visible Light Communications (VLC), I am also a senior member of the research group on Quantum Science and Technologies, in a close collaboration with the European Laboratory for Non Linear Spectroscopy (LENS) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Firenze, where we manipulate the ultimate properties of quantum gases with lasers and electro-magnetic fields. am also involved in Technology Transfer for the efficient exploitation of the technological outcomes of scientific research in the real world.

Main scientific interests:

  • Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) and Visible Light Communications (VLC): exploiting LED and Laser light for casting data over the air
  • Li-Fi: using white LED lamps as digital access points for Internet of Future
  • VLC for intelligent transportation systmes (ITS): making vehicles smarter and more connected via data exhange through head and tail lights
  • Experimental investigation on quantum atomic systems: using lasers to manipulate the quantum state of matter
  • Realizing quantum simulators with ultracold atoms.
  • Achieving single-atom control towards quantum computing and information
